This week, People For the American Way’s Next Up Victory Fund announced our endorsement of Andrew Gillum for Governor of Florida.
Currently the Mayor of Tallahassee, Andrew is one of the country’s leading young progressive leaders. As Mayor, he has beaten the gun lobby in court to protect common-sense reform policies, stood up to President Trump and right-wing Governor Rick Scott to defend immigrants, and fought like hell for the issues most important to his city -- all while championing progressive values at every turn.
Electing Andrew as the next Governor of Florida will create an exciting path forward for both Florida and the entire nation with a much-needed injection of bold, young, progressive leadership in this always-important swing state.
AND, with Andrew as the Democratic candidate, this is a race we can win! The Florida press is already calling him Democrats’ best shot at flipping the governorship and the last two Florida gubernatorial races were both decided by a mere 1%.

Now here’s where it gets personal. Before becoming mayor, Andrew was the youngest person ever elected to the Tallahassee City Commission and was a chief architect of our affiliate PFAW Foundation’s Young Elected Officials (YEO) Network.
That’s right. To say simply that this candidate is “one of us” would be woefully inadequate -- Andrew is a true member of the People For family.
Andrew has played a crucial role in the history of People For, serving as Director of PFAW Foundation’s Youth Leadership Programs for many years. But for all of Andrew’s contributions to People For, his contributions in his many roles to the state of Florida and to the leadership development of national progressive movement have been even greater.
I first met Andrew in 2002, shortly after he graduated from Florida A&M University, where he was student body president and established himself as a national progressive movement leader by leading the fight against then-Governor Jeb Bush’s attacks on civil rights.
Andrew and I were part of a bus tour -- sponsored by civil rights organizations including PFAW Foundation’s “Arrive With 5” voter mobilization campaign and the NAACP -- that traversed the entire state of Florida registering voters and collecting petition signatures to get an initiative on the ballot to reduce class sizes in Florida’s schools.
Since then, Andrew has continued to be one of the strongest progressive voices in Florida politics -- fighting for the rights and futures of his constituents in Tallahassee and all the people of Florida alike.
Naturally, I’m not the only member of PFAW family who has been endlessly impressed with Andrew’s skillful leadership and dedication to the progressive cause.
