As you might have heard or read, a late-night vote to pass the Senate Republicans' latest attempt at Obamacare repeal failed by exactly one vote when three Republicans -- Sens. John McCain, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski -- voted to kill the bill.
What an AMAZING and hard-fought victory! MILLIONS of Americans can rest more easily today, knowing that -- for now -- their lifesaving health care will not be ripped away from them or their family members.
THANK YOU for everything you did over these past months to speak out against and ultimately STOP Trump Republicans' assault on health care.
Let's be clear that this victory was not handed to us by three Republican senators, it was won by activists across the country who put tremendous pressure on their lawmakers with rallies, sit-ins, petitions, endless phone calls, and more.
Mitch McConnell has already indicated the Republican effort to repeal the ACA is only on pause, not finished. And in his floor statement, even Sen. McCain repeatedly reiterated his support for repealing Obamacare and promoted the myth of "Obamacare's collapse" (to be clear, it is not collapsing -- at least not without being undercut and sabotaged by Republicans or the Trump administration).
So celebrate! Because this is a MAJOR win (and a big setback for the Trump and the Far Right).
But also re-energize, because this fight ain't over.
A recap from Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight notes that "liberal activists flooded the phone lines of senators and showed up at town halls, making it clear to the Senate that they could face a backlash if they passed this legislation."
And also points out:
- The ultimate failure of this latest effort to repeal Obamacare was "not shocking," due to "the unpopularity of this legislation, both with the public and with Republican senators."
- "Of course, this isn't the first time the repeal effort has looked dead. It's still possible Republicans will revive the process once again."
After last night's vote the wind is at our backs but we must remain vigilant in demanding that future health care reform efforts be transparent, bipartisan, and, most important, PROTECT Americans' lifesaving health care -- not take it away.
