Republicans had a choice.
They could have passed a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security. They could have supported commonsense, bipartisan reforms to rein in ICE and Border Patrol. They could have listened to the American people.
They didn't. Instead, Republicans chose chaos.
Right now, DHS remains in a state of shutdown — not because Democrats blocked a funding bill, but because Republicans refuse to pass one that includes basic accountability measures for ICE and CBP. The Senate has already passed a bill twice that would fund all of DHS except ICE and CBP, keeping the government running while negotiations on accountability measures continued. But House Republicans have rejected that solution.
Why? Because Donald Trump and Stephen Miller won't let them.
Stephen Miller — an unelected MAGA ideologue — is calling the shots on American immigration policy. Now Republican senators are following orders, dragging the Senate through a painful, partisan budget reconciliation process instead of doing what most Americans want: reining in rogue federal agencies that have acted with impunity, unleashed disorder on our streets, and operated with zero accountability.
Senate Majority Leader Schumer said it plainly on the Senate floor:
"[Republican senators] want less accountability, not more. Because Donald Trump and Stephen Miller told them so. That is disgraceful, dysfunctional, a disservice to the American people."
He's right. And we need you to help us get that message to all senators.
The reforms Democrats are fighting for are commonsense and necessary. They're the same standards local police departments across this country follow every single day. The American people support them. Most voters support them.
But Republicans won't budge, because Trump and Miller need ICE and CBP to operate without oversight. Without guardrails. Without consequences.
That's a blank check for abuse.
We won't accept it. And we know you won't either.
