We can’t wait any longer: D.C. needs to be a state now.
Reintroducing D.C. statehood in both the House of Representatives and the Senate was a crucial step forward, but some members of Congress are already expressing their fervent opposition to making D.C. our 51st state. Passing D.C. statehood in both houses of Congress should be a priority for all of us who care about equality and opportunity – and victory has never been closer at hand.
With a Democratic-led Congress and White House, we have an unprecedented opportunity to finally provide the more than 700,000 D.C. residents – more than 50 percent of whom are people of color – with equal representation in the federal government. The House and Senate must pass this bill and end the racially biased exclusion of D.C.’s citizens from full representation.
