Tell your Rep.: Investigate How Top Secret Records Landed at Mar-a-Lago

U.S. House of Representatives:

As your constituent, I’m writing to request that you support a vigorous and thorough House Oversight Committee investigation, including criminal referrals to the Department of Justice if necessary, into how 15 boxes of presidential records – including ones with documents marked TOP SECRET – wound up at Mar-a-Lago.

The Presidential Records Act of 1978 – passed in response to a previous President’s habit of destroying documents – made it clear that presidential records belong to the American people. And the implications of top secret documents outside of government custody for more than a year should be DEEPLY troubling to anyone who cares about the national security of the United States.

Therefore, I ask that you publicly commit to supporting a full and thorough investigation of this entire affair by the House Oversight Committee, and also ask that you respond back to me with your views on this issue.

Recently, news broke that at least 15 boxes of official presidential records had to be seized from Mar-a-Lago by the National Archives & Records Administration.

Additionally, it was later revealed that these boxes contained numerous records marked “top secret” and “highly sensitive” -- the most closely held secrets of our nation’s government.

Who ordered that the documents be removed from the White House – and who physically removed them in violation of the law? Which of the former President’s senior advisors had knowledge of the removal? Were those documents properly protected from unauthorized access while in Florida? Why did it take more than a year for the government to regain custody of these documents? And are there any related documents that have NOT yet been transferred back into government custody?

No one knows the answers to these questions – which is why we need a complete and thorough investigation of this entire affair by the House Oversight Committee, the primary investigative committee of the U.S. House of Representatives.
