Urge the House to Reject the SAVE Act!

U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES:

As a concerned constituent, I’m writing to urge you to vote “no” on the SAVE Act. This legislation would add unnecessary burdens to the process of registering to vote. Under the SAVE Act, a driver’s license alone would not be enough to register to vote, and individuals would be forced to produce other documentation to prove their citizenship. Most common forms of identification in use today do not operate as proof of citizenship.

The rules put forth by this legislation are largely unworkable for many Americans. For example, a newly married woman who changed to her married name, and wanted to use her driver’s license and birth certificate as proof of her identity when registering to vote, would NOT be allowed to do so – because birth certificates are not amended for changes in last name.

This legislation is a classic example of a solution in search of a problem. Cases of noncitizens voting in federal elections are rarities and the numbers of eligible voters who will be turned away as a result of this legislation will be significant. Please reject the SAVE Act!

House Republicans are planning to move quickly when the new Congress is sworn in, with their latest attack on the right to vote. The SAVE Act would create barriers to voter registration by requiring states to obtain documentary proof of citizenship to register an individual to vote in federal elections. Not only would this bill effectively gut online and mail voter registration, it would also require reapplying whenever a voter moves, attempts to change party affiliation, or needs to update their name!

While Trump and his Republican enablers continue to tout the myth that there is a flood of noncitizens voting, requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote will instead dissuade many eligible citizens from voting and add additional burdens to the process of registering.
