Demand the Senate Suspend Kavanaugh's Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings

To: Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley
CC: Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee

Because President Trump was recently implicated by his former lawyer Michael Cohen as a co-conspirator in criminal campaign finance violations, we demand that the scheduled confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh be suspended.

These charges against the president coupled with, among other things, increasing revelations about criminal activity by many in the president’s inner circle and this president’s demonstrated hostility to the independent investigation into Russian election interference have put us on the path towards a constitutional crisis. Further, the appearance that President Trump chose this particular nominee – someone who has argued that a sitting president should essentially be above the law – in order to escape accountability cannot be ignored.

It’s time to put country and Constitution before partisan politics. It’s time to cancel the hearing and hit pause on Kavanaugh’s confirmation process.

Due to recent reports implicating President Trump in a conspiracy to violate federal anti-corruption laws, it’s now crystal clear that for the Senate to confirm Brett Kavanaugh would be a brazen assault on our democracy, checks and balances, and the rule of law itself. Talk about enabling corruption and obstructing accountability – any senator who now supports Brett Kavanaugh will be complicit in helping the president essentially choose the judge who will decide his own legal fate.

Trump is depending on Kavanaugh’s appointment to escape accountability via a Court biased in his favor. During this constitutional crisis especially, the Senate cannot be allowed to ram through the confirmation of Trump’s nominee to a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court.
