Senate Republicans, led by Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley, are trying to ram through the confirmations of as many extreme Trump judicial nominees as they can before the end of the year.
Four particularly dangerous nominees are scheduled for committee approval and ALL senators need to hear from their constituents that these unfit nominees are not acceptable and should be denied lifetime appointments on powerful federal courts.
Mark Norris (nominated to Western District of Tennessee): The majority leader of the Tennessee Senate, Norris has a long, bigoted record of being aggressively anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigrant, and more -- he made it much harder to remove Confederate statues from public places, led the effort to block resettlement of Syrian refugees, and championed policies such as strict voter ID laws and an abortion ban.
Steve Grasz (nominated to a Nebraska seat on the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals): Grasz has a record of far-right activism and was unanimously rated “not qualified” by the American Bar Association, specifically because they thought he would be biased as a judge. He has written that lower courts don’t need to respect precedent, he led an effort to outlaw late-term abortions in Nebraska, and served on the board of an affiliate of the Radical Right group Focus on the Family.
James Ho (nominated to a Texas seat on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals): Ho holds extreme views about the limitlessness of executive power, essentially subscribing to the notion that the president is above the law. That would make him a dangerous rubber stamp on Trump’s lawless, anti-constitutional agenda. Ho also thinks there shouldn’t be any campaign finance rules at all!
Don Willett (nominated to a Texas seat on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals): A judge on the Texas Supreme Court, Willett is beyond extreme -- he wants to turn back the clock to the infamous Lochner Era, when the Supreme Court routinely struck economic regulations, protections for workers, and any limits on corporate abuses. He’s against protections for women in the workplace against harassment and discrimination, said that improving women's working conditions is just "more government," and decries working women as creating the need for children to be placed in the care of “rented strangers.” Willett also affirmed his anti-gay bona fides when he joined a ridiculous ruling that even under the Obergefell Supreme Court decision guaranteeing marriage equality, it’s an open question as to whether a city can deny spousal employee benefits to same-sex spouses.
