The United States Postal Service is enshrined in the Constitution as a core priority of the federal government because it provides an irreplaceable service. By making sure that all Americans, regardless of where they live, can be in contact with one another, the Postal Service knits together the fabric of our community.
Because of decades of decreased revenue -- due to past legislation that severely limited USPS's ability to raise revenue, ongoing attempts to undermine the agency in an effort to privatize it, and the proliferation of online communication -- the USPS is in trouble. Especially in advance of the 2020 election when many voters are likely to cast ballots by mail to mitigate public health risks, we need a strong and robust postal service, perhaps now more than ever.
