House Republicans are fast tracking a dangerous voter suppression bill ahead of a crucial midterm election year. As early as next week, the House is expected to vote on H.R. 7296, the SAVE America Act, part of a renewed push to pass the SAVE Act in all its forms.
This bill would make it far harder for millions of eligible Americans to vote. It would require many voters to show documents like a passport or birth certificate just to register or stay registered, even though nearly half of Americans do not have a passport and more than 21 million lack ready access to these documents. Women who have changed their names, young voters, voters of color, rural voters, people with disabilities, and low-income Americans would be hit hardest.
The SAVE Act would also upend election administration by dismantling online and mail registration, crippling voter registration drives, inviting reckless voter purges, and placing massive unfunded burdens on election officials, who could even face penalties for honest mistakes.
Noncitizen voting is already illegal and exceedingly rare. The SAVE Act solves no actual problem. It is an attempt to silence voters before they can hold politicians accountable.
