Congress Must Act Now to Rein in ICE and Border Patrol

U.S. CONGRESS:

Deadly violence by masked federal agents has shocked communities in Minneapolis and Portland. These horrific acts underscore the danger of allowing immigration enforcement agencies to operate with unchecked power and little accountability.

As Members of Congress negotiate spending bills right now, you have a direct responsibility to act and stop further harm. As my elected representative, you must rein in DHS agencies that have repeatedly abused their authority.

I demand that Congress immediately:

  • Reject any increase in funding for ICE or Border Patrol, including detention funding
  • Refuse to advance any DHS spending bill beyond January 30 unless it includes enforceable limits, including:
    • Clear restrictions on dragnet arrests and enforcement that targets people based on race, language or accent, place of employment, or location
    • An end to Border Patrol deployment in cities and its expanding role beyond the border
    • Firm limits on DHS authority to move or reprogram funds, especially for detention
  • Exercise Congress’s constitutional authority to impose real oversight and accountability on DHS

These steps are the minimum necessary to protect families, restore accountability, and prevent more lives from being lost.

Right now, Members of Congress are negotiating federal spending bills that will determine whether ICE and Border Patrol receive more funding or face real limits. These decisions are being made in the coming days.

Congress has the authority to intervene and protect communities. But that will only happen if lawmakers hear clearly from the people they represent.
