It’s imperative that we save the USPS, one of our country’s most relied-upon and beloved institutions, and to do that we urge you to fill all of the vacancies on its Board of Governors. We need them to be confirmed by the Senate and then installed as quickly as possible so that they can take charge of making community-driven changes that will help sustain USPS for generations to come.

Donald Trump may now be out of office, but his crony, Louis DeJoy, is still the Postmaster General. And DeJoy seems intent on harming the U.S. Postal Service as much as possible. More than 7.5 percent of first-class mail was late during the summer of 2020, after he had been on the job for only one month – and after the agency had survived the initial pandemic service crush without any severe service disruptions. At the end of 2020, only 38 percent of mail was delivered on time.

And this month, two people briefed on DeJoy’s “strategic plan” for USPS have revealed that he intends to ban air transport for first-class mail at a time when delivery rates are already historically low. For DeJoy to implement changes of this magnitude to regular mail service in the midst of a pandemic – during which receiving medications and paying bills by mail have continued to be a lifeline for millions of Americans – could be catastrophic.

Our clearest path to protecting the USPS right now is for President Joe Biden to fill the remaining four vacancies on the USPS Board of Governors, the agency’s governing body. Once the new governors are confirmed by the Senate, the board will have enough votes to both finally oust DeJoy as Postmaster General and empower the agency’s leadership to make community-driven changes that will help sustain USPS for generations to come.
