Demand DHS Accountability Reforms in the Funding Bill

U.S. HOUSE:

As your constituent, I am urging you to ensure that any funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security includes enforceable accountability for ICE and Border Patrol.

Recent DHS enforcement actions reflect a dangerous escalation of violence. Federal agents operating under DHS authority have killed people during enforcement operations, including U.S. citizens. These incidents are the predictable result of masked agents, unchecked use of force, warrantless actions, and a system in which agents rarely face independent investigation or consequences.

Funding DHS without reforms would amount to approving this escalation and allowing it to continue with taxpayer dollars.

I am asking you to support the following accountability measures in the DHS funding bill:

  1. Require body cameras for all ICE and Border Patrol agents
  2. Prohibit masks or other identity-concealing gear during enforcement actions
  3. Require judicial warrants before agents enter homes or remove people from their vehicles
  4. Require independent investigations when DHS agents break the law, conducted by state or local authorities rather than the Department of Justice
  5. Explicitly prohibit the detention or deportation of American citizens
  6. Establish transparent guidelines for use of force by ICE, Border Patrol agents, or other immigration enforcement officers
  7. End enforcement actions at sensitive locations, including schools, child-care centers, hospitals, places of worship, and other family-centered community spaces

This funding bill is where Congress decides whether there are limits on DHS power. I urge you to make these reforms nonnegotiable in the final legislation.

Congress is finalizing a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security, and the decisions being made right now will determine whether ICE and Border Patrol continue operating without meaningful limits or are finally held accountable.

In recent months, DHS enforcement actions have shown a dangerous escalation of violence. Federal agents have killed people during enforcement operations, including United States citizens, while operating behind masks, ignoring warrant requirements, and avoiding independent investigation when the law is violated. Funding DHS without reforms would allow this escalation to continue with taxpayer dollars.

This funding bill is where Congress must draw a clear line.
