U.S. SENATE:
It is your job to review and consider the nominations Donald Trump puts forth to fill his cabinet and other important positions in his new administration. Any attempt to recess to allow these nominations to be rammed through without vetting and Senate approval is undemocratic and an abdication of your responsibility. You must resist Trump’s authoritarian efforts to undermine our Constitutional norms and values.
Recess appointments are a relic of an older time, without modern transportation and communication. When the Senate is not in session, the Constitution lets the president make a temporary appointment to fill a vacancy that would ordinarily need Senate confirmation. In modern times, such “recess appointments” should be used sparingly and only if there are no other options. But here, there clearly are options: giving each nominee a fair hearing and providing the Senate the chance to review the merits of each nomination. You must use your power to demand justice and reject recess appointments.
