President Trump has used false claims of “rampant violent crime” to try to seize control of Washington, DC’s Metropolitan Police Department – even though the federal government’s own data shows violent crime in DC is at a 30-year low. The authority that Trump is trying to use to take control expires after 30 days unless Congress acts to renew it. We must do whatever we can to prevent that extension.
This is not about crime. It’s about control.
Allowing a president to take over a local police force based on fabricated statistics would set a dangerous precedent for our democracy – weakening local self-governance and handing Trump yet another unchecked power.
Rep. Jamie Raskin and Sen. Chris Van Hollen have introduced a resolution in Congress to terminate the national emergency declaration that Trump is using to accomplish his takeover. Raskin has warned that Trump is using this stunt as a distraction from his scandals and refusal to release the Epstein files. And in a dangerous escalation, Trump has activated National Guard troops from West Virginia, Ohio, and South Carolina to enforce his control of DC.
Add your name now to demand Congress reject Trump’s takeover of Washington, DC’s police force.
