The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would restore the original preclearance requirements that were gutted by the Supreme Court’s 2013 Shelby County decision, add new nationwide requirements, and provide additional vital protections to increase the VRA's effectiveness in protecting voting rights across the country.
These protections are especially important now as nearly 20 states have passed over 30 bills designed to restrict access to the ballot box. And unless the Senate acts quickly, we’ll run out of time to prevent the worst of this new wave of state laws from taking effect before the 2022 midterm elections, not to mention the havoc they would create for the next presidential election.
It’s time for the Senate to act to protect our democracy – sign the petition now urging the Senate to pass the John Lewis VRAA!
